The Third Table

In 1991 I began to write a book about my experiences as a patient at the Austen Riggs Center in the 1960’s. In the years that followed, the book went through many incarnations  from a personal project to a group collaboration and back again.

This blog is a chronicle of what I experienced in producing the project. It is also designed to share much of the information I gathered in the process.  –Mary Fussell

“The Third Table” is about several people who lived and worked at the Austen Riggs Center, a small psychiatric institution in the Berkshires, during the 1960’s. By encouraging both staff and ex-patients to share their experiences, I have attempted to create a richly textured picture of Riggs.
